Can you become an accountant without AAT or ACCA?
Thinking about an accounting career or your own practice, but worried about years of exams? Here’s what actually matters in the UK — and where practical training fits in.
There is no single UK law requiring everyone doing ordinary bookkeeping or accountancy work to hold AAT or ACCA qualifications. But that does not mean you can offer every service without restrictions. Employers set their own requirements, regulated activities may require authorisation, professional-body rules can apply, and independent practices generally need appropriate anti-money-laundering (AML) supervision.
What route is right for you?
🎓 Professional qualification route
AAT, ACCA and other bodies offer structured study, recognised credentials and valuable career opportunities. They may be especially useful for employers requiring particular qualifications or for longer-term professional ambitions.
🧰 Practical skills route
Learn the actual workflows: bookkeeping, software, client onboarding, tax processes and business setup. This can help you prepare for suitable work or explore independent practice, subject to competence and legal requirements.
You do not necessarily have to choose one route forever. Practical learning can complement AAT or ACCA studies.
Three things to understand before you start
Jobs have different rules
An Accounts Assistant vacancy may accept practical experience; another employer may insist on AAT. Read the actual job description.
Practice needs compliance
Providing covered accountancy services to clients usually requires AML supervision, alongside relevant business and tax obligations.
Membership can change things
If you’re an AAT or ACCA student or member, check your body’s current rules before offering independent services.
What practical skills do you need?
Bookkeeping and reconciliations
Record transactions, manage invoices and understand bank records.
Accounting software
Practise real-style workflows rather than only memorising terminology.
Tax and HMRC processes
Understand how Self Assessment and other services work, including authorisation and filing responsibilities.
Client and practice processes
Learn onboarding, engagement documents, AML checks and how the work fits together.
How does AKUK help?
AKUK’s Professional Accounting Practice Programme focuses on learning by doing. You can work through practical accounting examples, use a fictional company’s sample records to practise in Capium, revisit video demonstrations and explore the steps involved in opening an accounting practice.
Students also receive 365 days of access to lessons, updates and a private support community. AKUK is CPD-certified practical training — not an AAT/ACCA qualification, practising certificate, AML registration or promise of employment.

Can I call myself an accountant without ACCA?
The general term “accountant” is not the same as protected professional designations such as “chartered certified accountant”. Do not claim membership, credentials or permissions you do not hold. Some services and titles have specific restrictions.
Can I open an accounting practice without AAT?
Potentially, for suitable services, if you are competent and meet the relevant legal requirements. Check AML supervision, the services you plan to provide, and any professional-body restrictions that apply to you.
Can I study AAT or ACCA and take AKUK too?
Yes. AKUK’s practical training can complement formal studies. However, students and members must check their professional body’s rules before offering services independently.
Does AKUK give me a licence to practise?
No. AKUK teaches practical processes and provides a completion certificate; it does not grant professional membership, a practising certificate or regulatory authorisation.
Start with your own career goal
There isn’t one perfect route for everyone. If your goal is a junior accounting job, focus on employer requirements and practical competence. If your goal is an independent practice, learn the client workflow and check your compliance obligations before taking on work.
