Yes. You can start learning bookkeeping with no previous experience or accounting degree. Entry-level employers may still ask for particular skills, qualifications or experience. If you plan to work independently, you must also meet applicable legal and AML requirements.
What does a bookkeeper actually do?
Bookkeepers help businesses keep financial records accurate and organised. Typical work includes recording sales and expenses, checking invoices, reconciling bank transactions and preparing information used for accounts and tax.

Your six-step route into bookkeeping
Choose your direction
Would you prefer an entry-level job, career progression or eventually your own bookkeeping business?
Understand the basics
Learn income, expenses, invoices, VAT fundamentals and why accurate records matter.
Practise with examples
Try recording transactions, checking figures and reconciling a bank account using sample data.
Get comfortable with software
Develop transferable skills in spreadsheets and accounting systems, not just memorising buttons.
Explore entry-level jobs
Look for Bookkeeping Assistant, Accounts Assistant and Accounts Payable or Receivable roles. Check each advert’s requirements.
Keep building experience
Continue practising and learning. For independent client work, check competence, AML supervision and business obligations first.
What might your first bookkeeping exercise look like?
Imagine a small business with a handful of payments, supplier invoices and bank transactions. Your task is to record what happened, compare the records with the bank statement and investigate anything that does not match.
At AKUK, you can practise this type of work using a fictional business, sample financial records and Capium software. You can make mistakes, correct them and repeat the exercise without affecting a real client.

Not necessarily to start learning bookkeeping. Qualifications such as AAT can be valuable for employment and professional recognition, but requirements vary by job. Many ordinary bookkeeping services do not legally require a specific professional qualification; independent practitioners still need competence, appropriate AML supervision where applicable, and to comply with any professional-body rules.
How can AKUK help you prepare?
Instead of only explaining bookkeeping, AKUK helps you practise the actual work. You work with a fictional business and sample accounting records in Capium, learn to enter and check transactions, and see how bookkeeping connects with tax returns, HMRC processes and the wider client journey.
You also receive practical exercises, templates and checklists, recorded lessons you can replay, and access to a private support community during your 365-day access. If your longer-term goal is to run a practice, AKUK also explains the setup and compliance steps you need to understand.
It’s not a job guarantee or practising licence. It’s structured practical training to help you build skills and understand your next steps.
Can a complete beginner really make progress?
AKUK has published stories from students who started with little or no accounting experience and progressed towards accounting work or their own practices. Their journeys are individual, not a guarantee of the same result for everyone.
